Bridging the treacherous S-curves along NC 12 near Rodanthe - The Jug Handle Bridge
The Rodanthe "S-curves" area of NC 12 from the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to Rodanthe, is susceptible to breaches caused by coastal storms. As a long-term solution, the North Carolina Department of Transportation planned to elevate this portion of NC 12 onto the 2.46-mile long Jug Handle bridge, aka the Rodanthe Bridge. This distinctive design set a horizontal alignment for the structure, minimizing impacts to the environmentally sensitive areas in the Outer Banks while maintaining safe access for area residents and visitors to southern Hatteras Island. Located in a highly corrosive zone with a 100-year design service life, the multi-unit prestressed concrete girder bridge was designed to withstand basic wind speeds of up to 105 mph, water loads including wave actions due to 100-year coastal storms, and vessel collision forces. Pile bents supported on prestressed concrete cylinder piles were designed to withstand the imposed forces under deep scour conditions. To come up with an efficient design of the overall system, a holistic approach was utilized while selecting the superstructure, the substructure and the foundation types, span lengths, girder types/spacings, deck articulation including bearings, and superstructure-to-substructure restraint mechanisms.

Bios:
Kevin Fischer has 17 years of experience as a structural engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and is currently the Assistant State Structures Engineer.

Satrajit (Sat) Das has almost 30 years of diverse bridge engineering, management and research experience. Sat currently serves as the Manager of the Structures Group at RK&K in Raleigh, NC.
