Part 1: Asset Management of N.C. Structures
Daniel Muller will share the current efforts in regards to the asset management of NCDOT’s bridge inventory
Part 2: NCDOT Response and recovery from Hurricane Matthew
Ken Murphy's presentation will show the effects of Hurricane Matthew on roads, bridges, and other drainage structures in Division 6 (Harnett, Cumberland, Robeson, Bladen, and Columbus County) and the recovery efforts to restore the roadway system. Ken will also discuss some lessons learned and how we can be better prepared in the future to address an event of this magnitude.

NCDOT - Structures Management Unit
Daniel is a graduate from NC State (1998 BSCE and 2000 MCE). Upon graduation he worked as a structural engineer for a consulting firm in the vertical construction market in Jacksonville, Florida. Daniel has worked for the Structures Management Unit for 13 years and has been in both design and maintenance roles. Daniel currently lead a team responsible for developing statewide policies and standards for the design, construction and asset management of structures. He is also the current chair of the Southeast Bridge Preservation Partnership.
Ken Murphy Jr, P.E., Division Maintenance Engineer,
NCDOT - Highway Division
Ken is a 1987 graduate of NC State University where he received a BS in Civil Engineering (construction option). Ken has worked for NCDOT for 30 years and has held this position of Division Maintenance Engineer in Division 6 for 18 years. As a maintenance engineer, he says, “I became a jack of all trades but a master of none.” Ken is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the roads, bridges, and the support services for those assets (equipment, roadside enhancements, rest areas, signals, signs, pavement delineation, etc.). Before that, he worked as an Assistant District Engineer for 7 years in Raleigh and a District Engineer for 5 years both in Goldsboro and Raleigh.
