Description
Please join us for a Environmental & Energy Committee Meeting!
This will be a virtual meeting only
Guest Speaker:
Malia Dunn-Reier with Hazen and Sawyer will be presenting on Machine Learning
Description: The water industry is beginning to recognize and apply machine learning (ML) as a tool to optimize system operations in a way that was not possible even a few years ago. Accordingly, this presentation highlights three projects that were developed to illustrate the power of machine learning in the water space:
1) A fully deployed model predicting influent wastewater flow for wet weather management.
2) A desktop model predicting PFAS contamination.
3) A desktop model predicting sewer main failure.
All three ML models provide operational staff with insight that could not be generated through other means as easily or as quickly by virtue of the way that machine learning algorithms look for explanatory variables.
Bio: Malia Dunn-Reier is a Senior Business Analyst at Hazen and Sawyer and has been with Hazen for 4 years. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Kentucky in 2016 and graduated with a Master’s of Science in Data Analytics in May 2021. Her primary work and interests are in machine learning and building Business Intelligence dashboards.
